Intimate details of over 80,000 members of hookup platforms compromised by hackers

Cybercriminals have stolen highly sensitive data from users of the online hookup platforms, CityJerks and TruckerSucker.

Email addresses, direct messages, poorly encrypted passwords, profile pictures, IP addresses, date of birth and biographies are now up for grabs on a data leak forum.

News of the breach surfaced last week after a tipster alerted security consultant and owner of Have I Been Pwned platform, Troy Hunt, of the leaked databases.

According to Hunt, the stolen data is highly sensitive and could be used in devastating attacks against victims.

“The stolen passwords are scrambled with a weak algorithm that could potentially be broken and allow hackers to see the actual passwords,” Hunt told Tech Crunch journalists. “It’s really just a typical forum breach, albeit with super sensitive content.”

The post advertising stolen data from the two dating platforms holds information from 77,000 CityJerks users and 8,000 TruckerSucker members.

What does this breach mean for impacted individuals?

Data leaks involving PII alongside more sensitive information such as sexual orientation, private messages and passwords are a gold mine for cybercriminals who can use the leaked data to blackmail and harass victims.

Like in the devastating 2015 breach that hit pro-adultery website AshleyMadison, the leaked data is highly recyclable, allowing criminals to blackmail and extort users.

On top of the indisputable privacy risks, users could face online defamation, financial losses, family problems, and, in some cases, even lose their jobs.

It’s recommended that users immediately change their password and watch out for unsolicited correspondence.

The information we wittingly and unwittingly share online can be used against us at some point in our digital lives.
